Curriculum
At Redbourn Primary School we follow the National Curriculum for Years 1-6 and the Early Years Foundation Stage for Nursery and Reception. The sources of our curriculum can be found here.
Over the last three years we have thought about What makes Redbourn, Redbourn? Why we are special and different from other schools and communities?
As a large village primary school, the vast majority of our children come to us in Nursery from the immediate vicinity of the school, or surrounding smaller villages or towns. It’s important that we recognise our connected community within the school’s unique location and demographic. Some of our children are well travelled and have access to a wide range of experiences, but this is not the case for every child.
Our curriculum comprises:
- Knowledge
- Skills
- Experiences and opportunities
- Whole child development
- THRIVE Values
Our children are at the heart of everything we do. We hold every one of our children in high regard, and strongly believe that each child deserves equal access to our broad and balanced curriculum. Our Mission, Vision, Aims and Values are the golden thread that runs through the heart of our school. Our school values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which will prepare our children to be confident, happy citizens.
Redbourn Primary School has the highest expectations of all members of the school community and inspires positive attitudes to learning and behaviours. In order to achieve this, we give children and adults every opportunity to thrive.
Supporting and promoting positive mental health and wellbeing is a very important part of our school's purpose. As well as embedding it into all areas of our curriculum, we teach the children explicitly through weekly assemblies. We also take great care to ensure that British Values, SMSC and PSHE are evident in our teaching and learning.
The opportunity to be active and creative is one of huge importance and we hope to offer every child the opportunity to find their own passion – be it academic, sport, music, art or drama. Most importantly we instil a love of learning.
Through our inclusive broad and balanced curriculum and the extra-curricular offer, we are able to provide a huge variety of opportunities and experiences for all the children at our school.
Please see the subject links below for a curriculum overview and year group Learning Journeys for each subject. There are also subject specific pages on the Our Curriculum tab for Reading, Phonics, Maths and each year group containing termly curriculum maps and teacher newsletters.

School Improvement
Each year, Redbourn Primary School Senior Leaders, with input from Governors, school stakeholders and external advisors, scrutinise our school's strengths and areas for development, to devise our new School Improvement Plan (SIP).
The SIP drives school improvement and outlines the key priorities and in more detail the actions needed to achieve our targets. Attendance, behaviour and reading have been the focus for the last 3 years on our SIP, and we have seen rapid and sustained progress. We continue to focus upon and improve the writing curriculum and delivery to improve outcomes for all children.
Please see our core priorities below for 2024-2025. Progress towards these focus areas are tracked and monitored throughout the year
