Redbourn Primary School

This is the Schools Motto

British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values.

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • Democracy

Positions on the School Council and Eco Council are decided through a democratic process involving all pupils.  Pupils are given an understanding of freedom of speech for all. Assemblies and child friendly news sources are used to facilitate discussion of local and national issues.

  • Rule of law

Pupils learn what is right and wrong through our classroom Golden Rules, Playground Rules and School Rules underpinning our Behaviour Policy. This is reinforced through our whole school THRIVE Values. Links are made to the laws of the country and supported by visits from our village police community support officer.

  • Individual liberty

All pupils are made aware of their individual responsibility in making choices and decisions and are helped to understand their rights.  Our Behaviour Policy embeds the idea of consequences based on choice and action.

  • Mutual respect

Our school sets high standards with regards to politeness and considerate behaviour.  All staff consistently model mutual respect in their relationships and interactions with children and parents/carers.

We fundraise for charities throughout the year such as Red Nose Day, Children in Need, Redbourn Food Bank, Canine Concern (reading dogs for schools), Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Amy Robinson Foundation, Emily's Fund as part of The Brain Tumour Charity, Show Racism the Red Card, Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Friendship Boxes for Ukraine via the Harpenden Rotarians.

  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Debating forms part of English lessons where pupils listen and respond to contrasting viewpoints.  The school actively celebrates its religious, cultural and ethnic diversity.

All incidents of racism and bullying related to protected characteristics (i.e. age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity) are registered and the Local Authority is informed.
